In between his two seasons at Richmond he was captain-coach at Nhill. 1932 South Melbourne. 1933 Captain/Coach of South Melbourne Premiership team He remained coach until the end of the 1936 reaching the Grand Finals in 1934/35/36 but did not win. 2003 named the South Melbourne/Sydney Swans coach of their Team of the Century.
