If your father owned a number of sawmills, why wouldn’t you have your wedding at one of them.
The photograph is of the wedding of Robert Pearce to Isobel Freeman in 1911.
John Freeman was one of the most successful sawmillers in Longwarry for several decades after he bought the Maisey sawmills in 1905.
He further developed the tram tracks that went out to the Labertouche bush mills and with horse and wagon the timber was brought back to Longwarry.
Isobel was his daughter and Robert Pearse was the son of another local sawmiller.
The wedding was held at the Bunyip River Sawmill and you can still visit the site and see some of the signs of the mill today.
There is a walking track that starts off from a makeshift car park at the intersection of Bunyip River Rd and Aqueduct Track. It is about a 13.2-km out-and-back trail and considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 3 h 49 min to complete. There are some large open spaces at the site, a picnic table and campfire. A great spot to camp overnight for those interested.
