There has been a welcomed addition to the well-maintained Longwarry Memorial Park in Bennett Street, with a mural commissioned by our Group

The mural has been painted on the wall of the Longwarry Fire Station that faces into the Park and depicts a photo of the Longwarry Fire Brigade in 1905.

We were sent the photo several years ago and we have used it in presentations before, but we always envisaged it becoming a mural on the Fire Station wall.

The suggestion of the mural was welcomed by the local CFA and with their cooperation, along with a generous grant from the Community Bank – Drouin and District, the mural became a reality.

The mural was painted by Simon White, a Gippsland based artist who specialises in large scale murals and his work can be seen in many locations throughout Gippsland and beyond.

The work took three days but with weather conditions it wasn’t plain sailing to get the work completed.

We have been very active this year with information sessions to various Clubs, and a detailed research project of the Longwarry RSL has been completed.

Another well received project was the erection of information boards at the football ground, about 4 players from the town who have gone on to have very successful careers in League football.

However, the mural is possibly the biggest and most notable in the community.

We have identified other sites in the town where murals depicting its history could be placed and we will continue fundraising in an endeavour to add even more interesting features in Longwarry.
